Bio:
Andrew Demirjian is a video artist based in the New York metropolitan area whose work questions western notions of self-improvement, productivity and success. On a broader level, the work also examines the role of mass media as cultural controller.
Andrews videos have been screened in galleries and exhibitions in Germany, Poland, Austria, Mexico and Armenia. He has received an Artslink grant and artist residencies at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester and The Center for Contemporary Experimental Art in Yerevan, Armenia. In the US, his work has been featured at the National Conference of the Moving Image Archive, the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, the Education Channel and Harvestworks in New York.
Artist Statement: My videos are short, often under two minutes in length, employing quick edits with special attention to audio that reflects and expands the resonance of the images. The pieces re-contextualize familiar pop-culture visuals like car chases, celebrity interviews or boxing matches, subverting their original meaning through audio and text. One Arm Bandit (2002) implements a Las Vegas style slot machine to disseminate anti-consumerist slogans instead of cherries or numbers.
