Bio:
The sculptures exist within the structural framework created by High Modernism, where form tries to be an honest expression of material use. The glossy surfaces and concern for finish reference Pop's sense of humor and acceptance of the marketplace, but departs from Postmodernism's irony and cynicism. I find real beauty in the cheap materials, and use my fake wood with sincerity. Current work produced in the same materials plunders the internet, incorporating sculptural silhouettes of images to skewer stereotypes in American culture.
Philip Simmons lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has had two solo exhibitions at Room for Contemporary Sculpture, Berlin; and a solo project at Rosenwald Wolf Gallery, University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Group shows include: Star67 Gallery, Brooklyn; Nordbank LLB Gallery, Hannover, Germany (catalog); and Art in City Hall, Philadelphia, among others. Simmons earned a fine art degree at The Pennslvania Academy to the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1999; a Master of Fine Art, Fachhochschule Hannover, 2001; and was the guest student of Prof. David Evison at Universität der Künste Berlin.
