Curator: C. Daniel Dawson and Vernon Reid
Bio:
The acrux is a contemporary version of a "N'kizy" that is used for communication with the ancestral world and represents all of the power of the earth in miniature. It is activated by the musician or composer playing the set of discs mounted on top of the glass sound board that sits on a terra cota bowl. In its function as a N'kizy the acrux is also the materialized component of the score of a piece called "the eye in the fishing hook" or "o olho no anzol" and it has been generated through the use of the Agolian modes theory. The piece is part of the Pangeia Instrumentos album released by Rephlex Records in 2003 (London).
Steadily building an impressive array of musical instruments since the early 90's, Gama experiments with the phenomenon of metamorphosis of instruments and musical crafts that span the period from pre-historical times to our days. By introducing the construction of the instrument into the writing process, Gama adds new elements that become part of the piece being composed.
