Bio:
"The Land of Lakes" is a reproduction of the famous Land O' Lakes butter package artwork, sans Indian maiden and text. The piece provides the viewer with the experience of encountering advertising with fresh eyes. The landscape, devoid of a specific product to advertise, still seems to promise something. In fact, the lack of specificity increases the promise; since the thing being promised is unclear, it could be almost anything. Of course, this is the goal of all advertising -- promising something more than just the product itself, rather, a way of life in which the product being sold is an essential part. In short, an empty promise.

The title of the piece, "The Land of Lakes," refers to both the butter package and Minnesota's state nickname, "The Land of 10,000 Lakes." (Land O' Lakes is based in Minnesota.) In addition to the commentary on advertising in general, the title of the piece invites the viewer to contemplate to what degree this familiar butter package has affected their mental picture of Minnesota's natural landscape. Since the product itself is named after its home state, one assumes the package reflects the appearance of Minnesota to some extent, but how much has that original kernel of reality been processed in order to arrive at this image?

Robin Treadwell (b. 1982) spent time in Florida, Texas, and Georgia growing up. She attended Antioch College in Ohio, and then transferred to the Pratt Institute, where she recently received a BFA in Printmaking. She currently lives and works in New York.
